Hi, friends! As you may remember, in my previous blog post, I shared some updates about our startup in New York. I signed off hoping that I would return with good news. Well, here I am again, although this time in a completely different setting and with entirely different emotions.
New York to Mexico
I had never been to this country before. As soon as I finished taking care of my business, I realized that letting this opportunity pass me by would simply be a crime. Just imagine: you are in the United States, the World Cup is about to begin, and you are supposed to miss this historic event? Out of the question. I decided that this was the perfect time for my first trip to South America.
The Journey to Mexico City and My First Impressions
I flew from New York to Mexico City. The flight took approximately five hours. I arrived one day before the match so that I would have time to prepare and settle into the city. As soon as I arrived, I checked into my hotel. I did not want to exhaust myself after the flight, so I decided not to take on too much and spend the day going for a relaxed walk. At the hotel, I ordered a delicious, hot quesadilla filled with cheese. From the very first bite, I realized that authentic Mexican flavors were something else entirely.
After getting some proper rest and having a bite to eat at the hotel, I walked toward Zócalo Square in the historic center. There, I found the FIFA Fan Festival, where the football fever was already in full swing. The square was packed with fans. There was music, singing, and a genuine festive atmosphere everywhere. I grabbed a beer from a street stall nearby and watched the match on a big screen.
The Mexico-England Match
On match day, Mexico City was probably the liveliest city on the entire planet. Wherever you looked, there were people wearing green shirts. Before I reached the stadium, I thought I was simply going to watch a good World Cup match. A few hours later, I realized that, for Mexicans, this was no ordinary game. The entire country was standing on the pitch alongside its national team.
Personally, I am not a particularly devoted supporter of either Mexico or England, so I was observing everything through the eyes of a visitor. Even so, when I saw Estadio Azteca, I felt a shiver run through me. This is a place where football history has been written. By the time I arrived, the roar of tens of thousands of people could already be heard inside the stadium. It was a sign that an unforgettable 90 minutes lay ahead.
All of this reminded me of my own country. Suddenly, I pictured the emotions we felt when Georgia qualified for the European Championship. It was exactly the same sense of unity, the same almost overwhelming love and national pride. Football truly has an extraordinary power to bring completely different people together as one.
Before the match began, the weather took a turn. Because of the torrential rain and poor conditions, kick-off was delayed slightly. The wait only intensified the tension, and as soon as the referee blew the whistle, the entire stadium erupted.
When Mexico scored the first goal, the noise and shouting were so intense that it felt as though the stands of the Azteca were shaking like an earthquake. Cups of beer were flying through the air, and complete strangers were hugging one another and crying. Later, when an England player was sent off, the Mexicans began to believe that victory was within reach. However, despite their relentless attacks in the final minutes, Mexico was unable to hold on to the scoreline they wanted. After the final whistle, a heavy silence fell over the stadium for a moment, as though everyone had stopped breathing. There was deep disappointment in the eyes of the locals. Even so, they applauded their team until the very end to show their gratitude.
MÉXICO, SIEMPRE TE RECORDARÉ
This trip will remain one of the best memories of my life. With its genuine emotions and hospitality, Mexico won me over from the very first day.
I am writing this blog from Mexico City as well. I have not had any problems with internet access here, either. mobineX roaming internet works perfectly well in Mexico. This time, I purchased an unlimited package again. I switched from my American eSIM to a Mexican electronic SIM card with ease.
I still have a few more days ahead of me, and I plan to make the most of them. I want to visit the ancient pyramids and become even more closely acquainted with the local culture.
My next stop is New York again. After that, I will return to Tbilisi.
See you soon!
